Step into the light

Isaac, Abigail, and Samuel are playing NICELY together.
Sam comes in my room.

Sam: Mama, can you tie this apron on me?
Me: Sure, what are you playing?
Sam: I'm the step-dad.
Me: What?
Sam: the step-dad. Ike says I have to be the step-dad.
Me: Isaac! What is Sam?
Ike: He's the step-dad and I'm the regular dad.
Me: What is a step-dad, Ike?
Ike: MOM!! I already know all about step-dads!
Me: tell me
Ike: Come here and we'll show you.

Sam and Ike lead me out to the hallway.

Ike: See, there's MY 'house' in Abby's room. I'm the regular dad.
Sam: this is my house (pointing to the stairs) 'cause I'm the step-dad.
Ike: Sam, show her.

Sam hops onto the second step and lies down.
Sam: see! this is the step-house for the step-dad!
Me: You're right, Ike. You do know all about step-dads!

In an attempt to lighten the mood

I just arrived home from...............taking Jay and Dave to the...............wait for it............LIBRARY!
Seeing as how I seemed to be shelling out a good third of Dirk's salary to Half-Price Books and Amazon every month AND having exhausted the Granny Supply and still not satisfying our first-ever voracious reader's appetite, I buckled under peer and offspring pressure I have received.

We drove to the small branch that is so disastrously near it leaves me no real excuse. The appropriate library cards were applied for and given (after I paid an 8year old fine of $1.20). The books were browsed. Before leaving home, my type-A firstborn (I wonder where he gets it) had written down various authors he and his brother wished to find. They found some of them.
The staff was alarmingly helpful. They even told the boys in giddy voices that they can get books for them at other branches, a fact I knew and had chosen not to disclose.

Alas, the bibliophile Dave was in sheer heaven. He stated that he would never be bored again. And, now he doesn't have to wait, paycheck to paycheck, for reading material.
I came home unscathed and hopeful, never having to take a puff from Sam's inhaler that I had brought along for the occasion.

I think it will take awhile for Dirk and I not to cringe slightly when seeing our progeny reading a BORROWED book (books are meant to be bought, didn't you know that?) but these boys are relentless. I have caved and there is no turning back. I guess I am one of THOSE people now.

Blessings are mine, with ten thousand beside

Please pray for our Samuel. He has been sick almost non-stop since late September. We have had one inpatient hospital stay, one outpatient hospital visit, numerous tests & xrays, and too many doctor visits to recall. We will not be surprised to have another hospital stay in our near future.
We have been overwhelmed by family and friends' kindness and generosity. The food, candy(mostly from Adeana & Papa!), presents, and provision for medical bills is extraordinary. The Lord has provided for our every need, including the ones not yet known.
