I just arrived home from...............taking Jay and Dave to the...............wait for it............LIBRARY!
Seeing as how I seemed to be shelling out a good third of Dirk's salary to Half-Price Books and Amazon every month AND having exhausted the Granny Supply and still not satisfying our first-ever voracious reader's appetite, I buckled under peer and offspring pressure I have received.
We drove to the small branch that is so disastrously near it leaves me no real excuse. The appropriate library cards were applied for and given (after I paid an 8year old fine of $1.20). The books were browsed. Before leaving home, my type-A firstborn (I wonder where he gets it) had written down various authors he and his brother wished to find. They found some of them.
The staff was alarmingly helpful. They even told the boys in giddy voices that they can get books for them at other branches, a fact I knew and had chosen not to disclose.
Alas, the bibliophile Dave was in sheer heaven. He stated that he would never be bored again. And, now he doesn't have to wait, paycheck to paycheck, for reading material.
I came home unscathed and hopeful, never having to take a puff from Sam's inhaler that I had brought along for the occasion.
I think it will take awhile for Dirk and I not to cringe slightly when seeing our progeny reading a BORROWED book (books are meant to be bought, didn't you know that?) but these boys are relentless. I have caved and there is no turning back. I guess I am one of THOSE people now.

I hope you know, I am still laughing!
You know, I hold firmly to the principle "spend all my money on books, and whatever is left over spend on food and rent," and I STILL go to the library and check out a dozen at a time. LOL (But I think it's because I've moved so dang often I'm tired of hefting anything other than the 100 boxes of ESSENTIAL books.) Oh, and check this out, you'll crack up:

I joined the club this year myself, you are in good company!
LOL. I am one of 'those people' and I will have you know that I have a special crate in our living room just for library books. Also, we have a big bag that we take to the library with us to fill up every time we go.
